Reader Request: Where Can I Find Consignment Furniture?

hmorris May 19th, 2010

I got my first reader request! I love it when people start to notice you as someone who may actually have some inside (or at least local) info to share.  In any case, I receive an email from Christine in Lawrenceville who asked:

I’m trying to find a good furniture consignment store in the local area. There seems to be many antiques, but I have had no luck finding deeply discounted furniture. Can you recommend a place?

Christine’s email was perfect because I have been meaning to check out Skillman Furniture on Alexander Street for a long time now. I’ve known of its consignment collection since I moved to the area in 2003, but never made it over there..until now!

As you can expect from any store that sells products on consignment (clothing, home goods, etc), you’ll find an array of quality, style, and prices. Skillman Furniture carries sofas, end tables, armoires, desks, shelving, dressers, mirros and more. They even carry some new items like futons and unfinished wood bookshelves.  The armoire shown below was only $149 and I found some shelving and kids play tables for under $40!

The collection goes beyond their 6,000 sq. ft building: you can find items on Craigslist and eBay (search Skillman Furniture) and they’re even on Twitter and Facebook! And, you don’t have to worry about carting all of your discount finds away in your car or SUV-there is a $30 delivery charge if you live right in Princeton (price varies on location).

Skillman Furniture is at 212 Alexander Street, Princeton and can be found online at SkillmanFurniture.com. Call 609-924-1881 or email skillmanfurniture@att.net for more info.

Thanks for your email Christine and I hope that answered your question!

You can get lucky too @ Greater Goods Thrift Store in Hightstown, NJ…. its cheap but has a smaller selection…but you might get lucky …or call ahead for a special piece…

Leslie-Thanks for the additional suggestion. I don’t make it out to Hightstown enough and there are certainly a lot of good finds there. I’ll have to check it out for myself!

go round Princeton before the day of trash collection - you can often find those (cleaned-up) pieces at Skillman at higher prices later..
