A Hillsborough family needs your help. The Mathewson’s 7yr old son Joey has been in an induced coma since April without diagnosis. The increasing costs of medical care are becoming hard to manage on their own. Help support the family this Sunday, May 23rd at the Family Fun Day(see above) in Hillsborough and a cut-a-thon at 75 West Salon in Somerville.

Kids love to play with their food, so why not teach them how to make it.  Join Wholesome Kids Cook at Tiger Hall Play Zone & Activity Center for a fun & educational cooking class on Saturday, May 22 from 10am-Noon. $25 per couple (parent/child). To register, e-mail info@wholesomekidscook.com or call 609-937-5215.

The Princeton Girl Choir want to sing you a song at their 21st annual spring concert this Sunday, May 23rd 4:30 p.m., at The Performing Arts Center, Hopewell Valley Central High School, in Pennington.  Tickets can be purchased at www.showtix4u.com .  Tickets are $20 for Adults, $15.00 for Seniors, $10.00 for Students/Children.

Have you heard of Princeton Special Sports? It’s a not-for-profit, volunteer run organization that provides special needs children with the opportunity to play youth sports. Their programs are open to children from the surrounding Princeton area, age 4 through high school.

Did you know kids eat free at Chevy’s all day (and night) on Tuesday? I think Tuesday Night Nachos sounds like a yummy idea.

5 to Know Friday: Destination Trenton, Pennington Day, Biking Rewards

hmorris May 14th, 2010

Discover the arts, culture and entertainment of Trenton with “Destination Trenton,” a project by the Trenton Downtown Association. Follow their Tweets and Facebook posts on events like Hip Hop Karaoke, Red Molly at Patriots Theater, and the Trenton Film Society and Festival.

May is National Bike Month and Whole Earth Center wants to thank and reward those of you who chose to ride a bike instead of driving. Each week in May, at an random day or time, the first cyclist who rides by the shop could win gift certificates to the Princeton Record Exchange, Witherspoon Bread, Mediterra, Bent Spoon and more!

It’s too bad those Bouncy house things are just for kids because Pennington Day is going to have both a Bouncy House AND a Bouncy Obstacle Course! But wait, there’s more: pony rides, a rock climbing wall and a pie eating contest! Oh yeah, plus local bands, a dog show, a tennis tournament and lost of kids’ activities. Bring the whole family on Saturday, May 15th from around 10am-4pm.

The next time you go to the Princeton Soup & Sandwich Company on Palmer Square, make sure to join their shoppers club. When you reach $50, you get $3 off your order. They also do free local delivery.  Great idea for a healthy lunch at the office, huh?

The group of 15 shops on the corner of Chambers Street (on the south end of Nassau Street) actually has a name: Nassau Place. And their website,  http://www.nassauplace.com/index.html, includes a listing with info for all of the shops which include my favorites: Ma Cherie Boutique, Niko Niko, Tippy Toes, and The Red Onion.

5 to Know Friday: Stamp out Hunger, Bookscape, Mother’s Day jazz

hmorris May 7th, 2010

If you missed Taste of Princeton last week, you can still have an impact on fighting hunger by participating in Stamp Out Hunger on May 8th. All you need to do is leave non-perishable food in a bag and place it by your mailbox.  Your letter carrier will pick it up and then deliver to a local food bank or pantry.

So did you know that Princeton University has a children’s library? Yeah I didn’t either! The Cotsen Children’s Library is located on the main floor of the campus library. It’s appropriately called Bookscape and judging by the photos online, it looks like a fun literary escape for the kiddos. It’s free to the public and has a full calendar of events.

Jazz is one of my favorite types of music to relax to so I think it’s perfect that the Princeton Library has invited the Eric Mintel Quartet jazz ensemble on Sunday May 9th for Mother’s Day. The group has even played for former President Clinton at the White House.

Have you heard of the Princeton Garden Cooperative? They are a group of garden educators, writers and farmers who started a program to teach our young kids about gardening and growing fresh produce.  There are edible gardens at the elementary schools and 4 teaching gardens in Princeton.  You can connect with them through their blog, on Facebook or on Twitter.

The West Windsor Community Farmers’ Market is open for the season (well they officially opened May 1, so I’m a little behind)! This is one of my favorite places to get produce & coffee, listen to music, taste local food, and get out with the community.  Keep updated on their events through their website or Facebook.
