FiftyWiggins: Princeton’s “Green” Residences
hmorris June 16th, 2010
Yesterday, I had a chance to tour Princeton’s “green” condo building at 50 Wiggins Street, appropriately named “Fifty Wiggins”. The building, which dates back to 1905, has been completely renovated with a blend of new and original elements like original wood flooring and radiators combined with energy-efficient appliances and eco-friendly design concepts. In fact, the building is pending approval of a National Association of Home Builders Emerald Rating which is the highest rating for residential green construction.
Realtor David Schrayer of Coldwell Banker in Princeton was able to take me through the 4 unit building (2-one bedrooms, 2-two bedrooms) so I could see the unique features up close.
In the photos above, you can see the original features like the flooring, molding and radiators combined with stunning appliances and upgrades. Here’s a rundown of what makes this building “Green”:
Reduces Energy Consumption
- Highly insulated and air-sealed (exceeded blower test requirements for NJ Clean Energy Program)
- Est. 50% reduction in energy consumption over pre-renovation
- Energy Star appliances and light fixtures
Reduces Water Consumption
- All plumbing/fixtures are EPA Watersense rated for water consumption
Healthier Indoor Air
- Low VOC paints/finish on floors
- “Greenguard” rated countertop material-no off-gassing
Location
- Walking distance from town, train station, shops, trails, etc
- Walk Score of 97 out of 100 on WalkScore.com
If you wish to learn more about the property and see it in person, FiftyWiggins is a stop on the Sustainable Princeton Green Building and Garden Tour this weekend, June 19, from 11am-3pm. You can also visit online at www.fiftywiggins.com.
